Steps to Unclog Kitchen Drains the Green Way

Over time, your kitchen drain will clog no matter how careful you think you are into throwing anything down the drain. While it may be very convenient to buy a chemical drain cleaner from a store and pour it on the drain at once to solve the problem quickly, this method may prove to be more harmful and costly in the long run. Chemical drain cleaners can damage your plumbing if you use them often, and their toxicity can be damaging to your eyes, lungs and skin. These are four steps that you can do to perform a do-it-yourself drain cleaning without having to call a plumber bayswater and without using chemicals.

          1. First of all, lift the sink stopper to check if the clog is caused by food debris that was caught at the top of your sink drain. If you can see that there are food particles stuck there, remove them and try to run the water to see if it can flow freely into your drain. If you have done that and the sink is still clogged, pour hot water into the sink until it is half full to soften impacted food debris, melt solidified grease and facilitate their easy transition out of your drain.

            2. If you have already run hot water into the sink and the drain is still clogged, use a clean toilet plunger and pump on the drain ten times. On the last pumping stroke, lift the plunger quickly, so that you will dislodge the clog with vacuum. If the water still does not drain easily, you may need to repeat the process a few more times.

          3. If you have used the toilet plunger but to no avail, you will need to open up the trap, which is a curved piece of pipe underneath your sink attached to your drain. First, put a bucket underneath the sink, use a wrench to unscrew the plug at the bottom of the trap and allow water to run into the bucket. If there are no plugs, remove the trap by unscrewing the nuts at each of its side and then use a bent wire hanger or your hand to remove the blockage. After clearing the trap, reattach it and test it by running water on the sink to verify if the problem has been solved and if you have properly attached the plug.

          4. If the above method does not work, you will need to call for professional assistance to solve the problem. A plumber may need to use a plumber’s snake to clear the clog. While this professional equipment may be available in most hardware stores, using them indiscriminately and incorrectly can damage your plumbing.

Although clogged kitchen drains may be a frequently encountered problem that is easy to solve, there are some instances where DIY methods may fail. In this case, calling a plumber bayswater should be your next option. Aside from having the necessary tools to unclog the drain, they have the expertise and the experience to properly inspect, diagnose and solve the problem without having to resort to the use of corrosive chemicals that are harmful to you, your plumbing and the environment.
