Why Should You Filter Your Drinking Water

The most important thing we have of water is for drinking and for cooking food. But how many of us would bother asking about the cleanliness of the water we use? Do we ever doubt about the quality of the liquid which we fill our flasks with or which we take our meals with? Could we be exposing our families, especially children, to unsafe drinking water?

Not many homes in Burwood, Victoria might have access to clean drinking water, and for this, they could be fully exposed to certain impurities and dangerous chemicals. Many homeowners do not have water purification or softening system and moreover, they could not be aware that contaminants are already creeping in through the pipes. If our cities sourced its main supply from water bodies that show signs of pollution, we could be in for a health crisis.

Knowing the quality of our water is one way of protecting ourselves as consumers. What are the impurities in our water that could make it not suitable for our consumption? Certain impurities contain chemicals, dirt, minerals, pathogens and other micro-organisms that can make water taste and smell bad. They all cause various health problems ranging from skin infections to poisoning. Here are some of these impurities:

  • Minerals – Not all minerals could be bad for the body. We need calcium which promotes strong bones and prevent stroke, obesity and hypertension, and magnesium which prevents diabetes. The minerals which harms the body include copper, lead, iron and zinc, and imagine that we are drinking them.
  • Pathogens – Do you think it is safe to drink from a gushing mountain stream? Wrong, as it is totally exposed to pathogens from its surrounding environment. You cannot see the pathogens with naked eyes as they are microscopic. They are divided into three micro-organisms: Protozoa (which includes amoebae) which comes from human and animal wastes, bacteria (salmonella, cholera and E-coli) which becomes dangerous when mixed with human and animal wastes in water, and viruses (polio, hepatitis A) which are found in cloudy water.
  • Chlorine – Utility companies treat water with chlorine to kill the bacteria and viruses. However, it makes drinking water unsuitable for drinking. Even too much chlorine in a swimming pool does not make swimming healthy because it can cause skin reaction and asthma.
  •  Lead – This is one of the most dangerous impurities that can contaminate water. One way which lead can get into your water is through old pipes. Maybe it is time that you replace your pipes with new ones. Lead is so toxic that they stay in the brain tissues.
  • Pesticides – Does your drinking water have pesticide residue? Better not. Many years back, pesticides used heavy metals which cannot dissolve easily. Pesticides today are no better even if they are organic because they contain dangerous organic compounds. Pesticides and other chemicals are very dangerous to health even if they are present in our drinking liquid in trace amounts.
